UPM student exchange to Fapet UB

Towards ASEAN competitiveness, Faculty of Animal Husbandry University of Brawijaya (Fapet UB) was established a partnership with Fackulti Pertanian Jabatan Sains Haiwan (Animal Husbandry Department) Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). The partnership is such as in form of research collaboration, lecture exchange, and student exchange. One of students exchange forms, in the mid of February, UPM delegated 6 bachelor program students to have a 3-month internship program.

Under the supervision of Dr. Ir. Marjuki, M.Sc as a part of Fapet UB’s international partnership, they will have apprenticeship in several places such as Fapet UB, Balai Besar Pelatihan Peternakan (Big Office of Ranch Training/BBPP) in Songgoriti, Batu and also Beef Cattle Research Workshop (Loka Penelitian Sapi Potong/Lolit Sapo) in Grati, Pasuruan. During their internship in Grati Pasuruan, the UPM students group learned about Dairy Cattle , Dairy Goat and Beef Cattle Maintenance Management and also livestock waste treatment.

While in Lolit Sapo, were taught about beef cattle reproduction, semen collection, its evaluation and usage and also beef cattle maintenance management. Meanwhile in Fapet UB’s apprenticeship, they obtained presentation about Indonesian farming condition particularly around the location of the event, the visit and the farming business observation.

The internship had ended in the last April, and afterwards, the UPM students presented the activities results and had a discussion along with Fapet UB students in a seminar which organized on Monday (9/May/2016). According to them, it was an extraordinary experiences and many things to be learnt, especially that cannot be found in Malaysia. Such as beef cattle farming in Indonesia is more diverse, started from cattle type of Brahman, Maduranese, Balinese, Limosin, PO (Peranakan Ongole/Ongole hybrid) while in Malaysia the notably one is Kedah Kelantan cattle. In addition, animal waste in Malaysia is ignored and just thrown away, while in Indonesia, animal waste is being processed and used especially for biogas and bio-urine fertilizer. Waste processing technique in Lolit Sapo which let the cow manure pile-up in the cage and being trampled by the cattle is aimed to quickly being crushed and being fermented into fertilizer. Literally, pile of dung can cause ill cows yet what to be practiced in Grati during the time can’t be found the ill ones.

Before flying back to Malaysia, they were invited for refreshing in a while to enjoy Malang beautiful nature, shopping tourism and climbing Mount Bromo.

“They had adjustment very quickly and communicated with surrounding inhabitants. Very enthusiastic and passionate to actively participate in organizing the event,” said Marjuki. [Dita/Humas UB/trans. Denok]
