The Government of Indonesia aims to increase the number of international students studying in higher education institutions in Indonesia and to build World-Class Universities.

Based on Permendiknas No. 26/2007 and Government Regulation No. 17 of 2010, the Ministry of Education, through the Bureau of Planning and International Cooperation (BPKLN), encourages the establishment of International Offices at universities.

In line with this initiative, the Ministry of Education invited BPKLN and universities in Indonesia in 2010 to promote the establishment of International Offices in Indonesian universities. This effort was supported by the Directorate General of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education through the University Internationalization Seminars held in October 2010.

Supporting this vision and aligning with the Universitas Brawijaya (UB) Strategic Plan, the Rector of UB fully endorses the internationalization of UB to achieve World-Class University status. As a result, an International Office was established, officially known as the International Office Universitas Brawijaya (IOUB), through the Rector’s Decree No. 268/SK/2011 dated May 18, 2011.

The decree defines the structure of the IOUB, which consists of the Chairman, Regional Staff, Executive Secretary, Admission Officer, International Fellow, and Collaboration Services Officer.

Furthermore, based on the Rector’s Decree No. 61 Year 2023 on Amendment to Rector’s Regulation Number 12 of 2023 on the Organization and Work Procedures of Units under the Rector, the name of the organization is officially changed into “International Academic Affairs”, though we keep using the name “International Office” for external communication as it has been widely-known.

The vision of the office is:

To be a leading office in fostering international collaboration, promoting academic excellence, and enhancing global engagement for the advancement of education and research.

The missions are:

  1. To facilitate meaningful partnerships with international institutions to support academic and cultural exchange.
  2. To provide comprehensive services for international students, staff, and scholars, ensuring a welcoming and inclusive environment.
  3. To promote the global visibility and competitiveness of the university through strategic initiatives and programs.
  4. To support and encourage student and staff mobility for international learning and research opportunities.
  5. To uphold excellence in service, collaboration, and innovation in all internationalization efforts.

The structure of the organization consists of one director, with three divisions:

  • International Academic Engagement Divisionresponsible for exploring as well as establishing new international partners for UB.
  • Staff and Student Mobility Divisionresponsible for implementing new international student admission procedures (regular and scholarship schemes) as well as providing basic services for them during their stay at UB.
